Year End Review

Ended the year with 2615 Miles versus 2163 last year.
Happy with these numbers. I thought I might hit 3000 this
year but never really worried about it. I didn't even know
how many miles I had for the year till Dec 23 when I added
them up.
I did 5 Marathons this year my most in a year.
I had a personal best at Houston Marathon 1/17/10 2:50:02
I ran a 2:57 trail marathon 4/17/10 2nd place overall.
I was pleased with this result.

I also did 2 50 mile trail runs and a 50k trail run.
Placed in the top 10 in all 3 of these. The 50k I was second
overall.

Had my best 10k time 35:52 6/12/10

So not a bad year at all. I look forward to 2011.
I turn 40 in March so will be a Master runner.
I hired a coach and think with his help I will PR again in
the Marathon. May 15, 2011 Cellcom Green Bay Marathon.

Other goal for 2011 is to improve on my Pikes Peak Marathon
results. I think living in Colorado now will give me a huge
advantage over my 2 previous attempts.

Happy New Year!

Second fastest time I have run this loop. I was pushing as hard as
I could. I have not worn my HR monitor on this trail before so was
curious as to what it would be. I thought it would be higher. Last
2 miles it was 153 average. I saw it hit 157 a couple times.
Cold and snow is headed this way. Not looking forward to it. We
might get 3-6" of snow and single digits temperatures for highs.

I did good at not going over. Only 2 times it briefly hit 146.
I was surprised to see how low it was the first mile. Not sure
if altitude is a factor? It was always higher in Wisconsin.

5 Miles no time
1:00 pm) 40's Sunny!
Forgot my Garmin so no time. Funny how dependent I am to the
Garmin. I almost didn't run because I wouldn't be able to time
my run. I ran on the Pikes Peak Greenway so I knew the distance.
It's marked every half mile. I decided to run easy today since
I wouldn't know the pace anyway. Well running easier doesn't
mean it will be a easier run. I guess I'm used to running at a
certain pace. It felt harder to purposely run slower. A couple
times I would go to look at my wrist only to remember I didn't
have my watch on.

12:15 pm) mid 40's Sunny!
Merry Christmas Everyone!
25:19 for Incline. 3rd Best time.
Wore my HR monitor for the first time since moving to Colorado.
I guess I have been afraid to wear it fearing sky high Heart Rate.
Well I checked it just before starting going up the incline it was
74. It went up quickly once I started the work out. At the top it
was 156. It averaged 143 for the 25:19 work out. So not as bad as
I feared. My max is around 174 so I did not hit that.
I restarted it for the next 4.75 miles which was mostly down Barr
trail so it stayed low. It averaged 130 for this portion. I will
check it again this week on a normal flat run. I"m thinking it
will be 140's to 150's. Of course it depends on what pace I run.

Kind of a strange Christmas for me. My first in Colorado and away
from family & friends. Also I can't remember never having a white
Christmas. I don't mind that part though. I have seen plenty of
snow in my lifetime.

a lot of energy though.

and pushed hard and ran some fast miles for this course.
Today is the last nice day for a few days. We are going to get

I was not feeling it today. I was tired and this route didn't
help any. Lots of climbing. I started in Manitou Springs memorial
park 6300 plus feet and I went up to just under 9000 ft before
heading down Barr trail.

Longs Ranch road was new for me and it was super hard. It had
some very steep sections. I had a 1 mile stretch where I hiked
the whole mile and my split was over 16 minutes! It was probably
a 45% incline plus a couple inches of snow.

Great day to be out. Sunny no wind and great views!

51.55 Miles for the week. Nor bad considering I worked 6 days.

24:36 Incline. New Best Time!!! I pushed very hard today. I
wanted to break the 25 minute barrier. I was 25:11 on Thursday
so I new only need 12 seconds. Glad to do it now rather than
later. Once the incline gets more snow and ice I'm sure my times
will slow. Today there was no ice and only a trace of snow. It
was chilly but perfect weather for it. I still wore shorts and
I was plenty warm. I got a little chilled at the top. Once I got
going again I was fine. After the incline I go up another
quarter of a mile or so before heading down Barr Trail. I had my
fastest descent as well today. My footing is much better than it
used to be. Coming down I was running 6:40's. Doesn't sound
very fast but the switch backs slow you down.

been passed going up the incline. The guy that passed me started
behind me maybe 30 seconds or so and got to the top probably a
minute or two ahead of me. His time was probably 23:00 or under!

Incline Group Run New Season

12.57 Miles 1:58:20 9:25 average per mile
8:00 am) 30's - 40's Sunny!
I have been looking forward to this group starting up for
the last 3 months. The plan was go 2 hours. I went 1:05 out
before turning around and coming back the same way. I figured
I would run a bit faster coming back and I was right. Made it
back in 53:20. I think the course was much harder going out
so that's a big reason for the faster time coming back.
I was not real happy with how I ran. I really struggled on
some of the hills reducing me to hiking. It's early in the
season so no big deal. I now have something to gauge my
level of fitness. I have not really done any hilly long runs
so hopefully doing them once a week will pay off.
Today's route was up Ruxton Ave. to Ute Pass Trail to Longs
road over to Waldo Canyon and after 1.5 miles on Waldo Canyon
turned around and headed back.
44 Miles on the week. Lowest weekly mileage in a while. However
maybe my best week of running in months.

faster at altitude. This would have been a good paced run for
me in Wisconsin. So I wonder if my fitness is better than before
I moved to Colorado. I would think I could run at least 15 seconds
per mile faster at sea level.

Yes that distance is correct course was short. Very frustrating
when you pay to run a 5k and they can't get the distance right.
I ran okay and better than my first 5k here a month ago or so
when I ran 20:11. Still can't seem to run fast here. I'm getting
stronger at longer runs but these short ones are hard! I know
what I need to do to get faster but have not committed to it yet
that would be track work 400's & 800's. I like trail running too
much to spend a lot of time at the track. When it gets closer to

14 Miles 2:00:34 8:34 average per mile
2:30 pm) sunny warm 60's
Ran with Rich at the Air Force Academy. First time running there.
Very nice place to run. Trails were nice all single track.
Challenging trail with a good amount of hills. Got up to 7427 ft.
Low point was 6643 ft. We both were kind of tired on this run so
we didn't push too hard.
73 Miles on the week. Most I have done in Colorado!

Manitou Incline & Barr Trail

8.25 Miles 1:29:19
2:15 pm) Sunny 70's Warm!
Unbelievably nice today! Is it really November? Will be much
colder next week so I'm enjoying it while I can. Did the
incline today and had a new best time 26:30 versus 26:48. I'm
pretty happy with that. Went on up the Barr trail to 9500 ft
before heading back down. Lots of people out on the trail
today. I can't blame them.

7.25 Miles total
12:00 pm) sunny mid 60's
4 x 400's
1:19, 1:22, 1:19, 1:18
I have not done but one track workout so should not
be surprised how bad I was today. Plus I have been pushing
the miles a bit this week. After the 400's I ran 4.25 miles
and my legs could feel the fatigue. I need to stick with the
track as much as I'm not liking it. It will get better!
Little depressing though in high school I ran these in 55
seconds and I was not what I would call a dedicated runner.
Where has my speed gone? Will it come back?

Ran it harder than I wanted to. I would like to run these at

I have been running too hard this week. I'm only trying to
build my mileage up not run fast. Not working out to good yet.
Saturday and Sunday need to be easy! Tomorrow going to try
a few 400's. Don't want to over do it.

Pikes Peak Greenway

10 Miles 1:07:33 6:45 average per mile
2:15 pm) mid 60's Sunny! Windy!

Went North on the trail to fight the head wind so I would
have a tail wind on the way back. My goal was 10 miles no
plan on what pace I would run. I noticed my pace was getting
faster every mile so that became the goal to keep running
faster each mile. First 5 had a pretty good head wind.
I still managed to keep each mile faster. Mile 5 was 6:52.
When I turned around it felt easier mile 6-6:26 mile-7 6:23
mile-8 6:18 mile 9-6:34 hill mile 10-6:19.

I'm happy with this run it's probably the fastest 10 miler
I have done since moving here. Plus I ran pretty hard last
night so probably could have done better if fresh.

I think I need to do more longer runs and more runs that
are basically flat like this one. This is how I will get
in marathon shape for flat courses at or near sea level.

6:00 pm) low 50's
Ran from Trinity to Garden of the Gods and back. Small
turnout again. I was the only one doing the 8 mile run.
I ran the first 2 miles with a few runners. Pace was
slow so picked up the pace as soon as I was on my own.
I ended up running pretty hard. It was getting dark and
I was by myself so I had motivation to push. I got
startled by a huge mule deer he had a very large rack.
Thinking I might not run with this group anymore. The
group gets smaller every week and it's getting dark so
early. I can run earlier in the day when it's light
out.

15.5 Miles total
1 mile warm up
3.1 5k 20:19 3rd Overall 9:00 am) sunny low 50's
12:00 pm) 60's Hiked/Run with friend from WI.
11.5 Miles Up Barr Trail to Barr Camp and back down.

So I did my first 5k of the year and first one at altitude 7200 ft.
I really had a terrible race. I started out too fast for my current
fitness. First mile was 5:50 and I was totally winded after that
mile 2 was 6:27 and slowed even more at mile 3 6:35. Lots of work
to do. I need to work on speed and endurance!

Afternoon hiked up the some of the Incline and over to Barr Trail.
Dan and I went up to Barr Camp before heading down. We stopped
in and met the care takers. Very nice people! A husband and wife
take care of Barr Camp. Interesting story they are both ultra
runners having run many 100 mile races.

Ran on these trails Wednesday night for the first time. Wanted

here going off in all directions. Not sure how many miles of
trails are here. Today was not the day to run a lot of miles.
I'm doing a 5k in the morning. Next week will do a longer run
here. This is very close to my apartment 1.4 miles. So very
handy for me. I will run to the trail head next time. Weather
was fantastic! I was actually pretty warm but didn't mind at
all I will take all the warm days I can.

9.5 Miles
Went down to Pueblo with Rich for a track workout. My first in
Colorado. The track is at 4800 ft. so a bit lower than the 6200ft
I live at. We did 2 mile warm up. We did 2 sets of 600-400-200.
600-1:59, 400-77, 200-35
600-1:59, 400-76, 200-34
I felt pretty good except for the first 600 I think my system
went in shock from the faster than normal turn over.
After the workout we did a 5 mile easy run on some nice trails.

two miles the power went out. Good timing I was just going to

Denver Marathon Race Report

26.2 Miles 3:01:53 6:57 average per mile
7:00) am mid 40's start warming to upper 50's finish
40th Overall 4th Age (35-39)
Kind of a stressful start. I almost didn't make it to my corral
on time. I made it by like 30 seconds. Then the gun went off and
I didn't have my GPS signal yet. After a minute or two finally
got the signal and hit the start button. I started out pretty
quick. I was running 6:40's. My goal was 7:00 miles till I got
warmed up. So I went with it and decided to just run. Around
mile 6 GZ flies past me and says hello. He was doing the half
marathon and started in corral 4. He did awesome today 1:20 and
second master. Later saw him again as he was a spectator at mile
19. He cheered me on. I was not feeling good though at that point.
I had a bad side ache and it lasted for 4 miles before going away.
I went through the half at 1:29:44 so I had a shot as sub 3 but
knew it would be tough. I ran pretty good second half just not
good enough to do it today. My slowest mile was 24 7:08. So not
bad at all considering how tired and slow I felt at the end.
My loose goal today was 3:00-3:05 so I made my goal. This was
also my first road marathon at altitude so didn't know how much
that would effect me. Not sure how much it did. I think my 50k
from 2 weeks ago had some effects though. My legs didn't feel
fresh.
So this wraps up my season for 2010. I had a busy year 5 marathons
2 50 milers and a 50k. Most I have ever done. Time to recover and
get ready for 2011. I'm excited for it! Will turn 40 in March so
looking to place at some races as a master.

Started at Gold Camp road and ran .70 miles to North Cheyenne

bridges. I went out 3 miles before turning around. Got lost
a couple times as I didn't know which way the trail went.
I was at 9150 ft at turn around. When I started I was at 7500

though my breathing was very labored. I will run easy tomorrow
then take off Friday and Saturday. Race is Sunday morning at 7:00.
Not looking to run any certain time. This will be my first road

The Bear Chase 50k Trail Race Report

31.1 Miles 4:16:54 8:13 average per mile 2nd Overall
6:30 am) cool at start 40's warmed up into the 60's sunny.
Lakewood, Colorado Beer Creek Lake Park
Well not a bad day at all. I had no goals going into this race.
Just wanted to finish. I was not confident in my training leading
up to this race. I'm still adjusting to living in Colorado and
dealing with the altitude. Also normally I do several long runs
before an ultra and I didn't get them in.
The race started and I went out easy. Actually almost everyone
went out easy. First mile was 8:49. It was still pretty dark
and chilly so I think that was the reason. I wore a singlet, arm
warmers, shorts and gloves. I shed the gloves and arm warmers
after the first loop. The course was 2 loops plus a shorter
loop that the 10k runners ran. I got into a okay groove after
a few miles and actually pulled away from the pack. The course
has a few hill climbs and I just didn't have the legs to run them
I walked all the steeper hills. I think it helped me in the long
run though.
I started the second loop and I was feeling weak mentally and
physically. I decided I should back of the pace and just run at
whatever pace feels good. This helped and by the end of the
second loop I was running better. Note first loop and a half I
made 3 restroom stops. Not sure why? I also used the restroom
3 times before the race. I didn't even drink that much. I need
to figure that out. Nutrition wise I also didn't do very well
I only took 2 gels and a few honey stingers. I did however eat
bananas and oranges at the aid stations. I also drank some coke
at a couple.
The last loop the 10k distance loop I ran as hard as I could.
I still at this point didn't know what position I was in. We
started out with the 50 milers so I never took count. With
about 5 miles to go one of the volunteers said I was 6 minutes
back. That's allot with 5 miles. I kept pushing. I passed a few
runners but I think they were half marathoners that now were
also on course. At around mile 27 I see some kids and two
women. I get by the kids okay and go to pass the women on the
left and at the last second the lady moves to the left. I hit
her and lose my balance and fall down. No big deal I got up
and kept going. It was a bit frustrating though.
I arrive at the final aid station at about mile 28 and the
volunteer says I'm in third place. This is the first time all
day I now my position. I was surprised since I didn't feel
I was that far up. I figure that's it I will finish in third
and be happy with that. I keep pushing and see a runner ahead
didn't know for sure if he was a 50k runner or not. I get
closer and sure enough he was. I remembered running with him
earlier but lost him due to a bathroom stop. I passed him
and finished in second. I found out that I was less than 2
minutes behind the winner. Those bathroom stops really cost
me.
Really pleased considering everything. I feel I have lots
more room for improvement so that's exciting for the future.
I loved this race and it was done so well for a first time
event. I plan on going back next year.

The weather has been very warm here. We have been running way

Manitou Incline & Barr Trail

4.25 Miles
10:00 am) Sunny 60's Breezy
1 Mile Incline 28:18. Not very good today. I pushed hard just
didn't have it today. Forgot my music. I think that really
helps me on the incline. Ran down Barr trail didn't feel very
fast either. I think I ran too hard Wednesday night. Still a
great workout no matter the time. I'm thinking I should
probably do the incline 2 times a week. I will wait though till
after my 2 upcoming races.

Colorado Springs Streets

Wednesday 9/23/2010
5 Miles 34:10 6:50 average per mile
5:00 pm) Cloudy, drizzle
Ran some hilly streets near my apartment. Felt good for
the most part. The hills would get me winded but I would
recover quickly on the flats and downs. Finally got a
small amount of rain we sure need it here.

Jack Quinn's Running Group

6 Miles 42:11 7:02 average per mile
5:45 pm) upper 70's
Ran with the Jack Quinn group. Still have not met anyone in this
group. The problem is the group is too large. Felt okay not great.
My breathing was more labored than it should be. I never feel good
on these Tuesday runs for some reason.

5:10 pm) low 80's cloudy
Wore my new Brooks Launch shoes. I liked them they feel
light and cushioned. I will wear these probably at the
Denver marathon. So my run went very good. I have run
this before but not near this fast. My last 3 miles
were all under 6:20 pace.

Waldo Canyon

7 Miles not sure on the time.
9:45 am) sunny warm 70's
I didn't feel as strong as last weeks run here however I was
running about the same time as last week. I did walk more
but when running I was a bit faster. I was at mile 4.3 when
I saw a lady on the trail and she was waving at me. At first
I thought she was just saying hi. Then I heard her say stop.
I stopped and she explained to me that there was the guy
hiding in the bushes wearing camouflage and that he creeped
her out. She did not feel comfortable getting back to her
car and asked if I would walk with her. I was happy to do
it. I'm more concerned with someones safety than having to
end my run.

Garden of the Gods

9 Miles 1:19:00 8:46 average per mile
8:30 am) 70's Sunny!
Once again I found some new trails today. I'm still finding new
ones here. I have not figured out a route to run yet. I just
jump from one trail to another. I get a little lost sometimes
but I always find my way back.
My pace was not fast today but I find these trails are hard to
run fast. Sometimes I get lost because I can't tell which way
the trail goes. I don't think they are marked that well at times.
Will be working at the flea market again this weekend so don't
look to do many miles.

Bear Creek Lake Park, Lakewood, Colorado

14 Miles 1:54:03 8:09 average per mile
10:15 am) Sunny warm!
Drove 73 miles each way today to get my long run in on a course
I will be racing October 3. Well lets just say it didn't go as
planned. I was looking to do at least 20 miles and up to 25.
Well I had a few problems. First off I lost my map I was carrying
so I never really new if I was actually running any of the race
course. The course has 3 river crossings and I never crossed any
of them. I saw a few areas that might have been the crossing but
decided not to. I figured I would keep my shoes dry.
Second I started too late. I was sweating pretty good at mile 3
already. I knew I was in trouble. I was running in some open
sections and I could feel the sun just draining me.
Third I was dehydrated! I didn't realize how bad I was till mile
12 I had to stop and refill my bottle and I couldn't drink it
fast enough. You wouldn't think in only 12 miles it would be a
factor. Like I said though the sun was draining me and I should
have drank more.
Overall I'm still glad I drove up there. At least I know how to
get there on race morning and I'm pretty sure I ran some of the
course. My biggest mistake was just starting too late. If I
would have started at 8:00 I'm sure it would have been a whole
different run.

Manitou Incline & Barr Trail

5 Miles 58:41
10:00 am) upper 60's Sunny!
I felt better this time doing the incline. I went out a bit
easier for the first part and that seemed to help me get
into a better rhythm. I ended up with my fastest time 26:48
versus 27:32 2 weeks ago. I then ran down Barr Trail. I don't
want to go down all those steps. The trail is much more fun!
Tomorrow I plan on doing my last long run before tapering a
bit for my 50k October 3. I'm going to run it at Bear Creek
Lake Park, Lakewood. This is where the race is so I want to
get familiar with the course.

Red Rock Canyon & Jack Quinn Group Run

5.5 Miles 52:19 9:30 average per mile
Red Rock Canyon
10:00 am)
Ran on some new trails today and actually I started out on
what I thought was a trail but was just a dried up creek bed
I realized this when it came to a sudden stop. I eventually
found some trails and had a fun run. My hip was bothering me
a bit so didn't push pace.

5.60 Miles 38:49 6:56 average per mile

Felt good pushed the pace a bit.

Waldo Canyon

7 Miles 59:05 8:26 average per mile
10:20 am cloudy Nice Day!
Took of this weekend. No running! Saturday was planned and
Sunday I just didn't have the energy. Plus I think I needed
the time off.
Today's run was at Waldo Canyon. I had not run here in two weeks.
So I was looking forward to the run. I had a new strategy today
on the hills and that was small steps and high breathing cadence.
This worked well. Before I would try to take big steps and would
wear out quickly. This way I'm in low gear and can keep going
longer. I still walked briefly a few times but nothing like before.
Here is a comparison just to show my improvements since my first
run here
August 11, 1:08:15
August 28, 1:04:25
August 30, 1:04:39, 1:07:40

Pikes Peak Greenway (South)

17 Miles 2:00:23 7:05 average per mile
8:00 am) 60's sunny
Started at Monument Valley Park and headed south. I felt really
good after the first mile. I always struggle the first mile till
I get into my rhythm. I went out 8.5 miles and headed back. I
felt great until the turnaround. After that every mile just got
slower and slower. Also at mile 10 my hip stated to bug me. It
kind of went away and I forgot about it. The last mile it hurt
again and was much worse. I could hardly run the last half mile.
When I got home I took a couple Aleve. My hip feels much better.
I think it's okay. I'm wondering if it's the shoes. They have
high mileage on them that could be part of the reason. Also I
think my body needs a day off. So tomorrow I will take off.
Here is my splits just to show how bad it was in the second
half of the run versus the first. Not sure why I feel apart so
bad. I didn't feel like I was pushing to hard the first half.

1- 7:10 9- 7:12
2- 6:46 10- 7:04
3- 6:41 11- 7:13
4- 6:47 12- 7:13
5- 6:48 13- 7:12
6- 6:52 14- 7:14
7- 6:56 15- 7:16

17- 7:32

Manitou Incline & Barr Trail

4.5 Miles 1:00:13
1 Miles Incline 28:38
9:30 am) mid 60's Sunny!
I didn't feel great today for some reason. I was out of breath
the whole time going up the incline. I was 1:06 slower than last
weeks attempt. Not bad I guess considering how I felt. Plus I
forgot my mp3 player and that probably would have helped.
Then I went down Barr trail and I still felt flat. Oh well not
every run is going to go the way you want.

Colorado Running CO.

4.75 Miles 40:11 8:27 average per mile.
6:00 pm)
Rich and Dale did not show up so I ran with GW. The pace was
slower than I'm used to but sometimes it's good to have a
easy run. GW is a older guy but does some serious amount of
racing. He recently did the double! Pikes Peak Ascent and
the Pikes Peak Marathon. One of the guys that works at the
store was the winner at the American Discovery Trail Marathon
on Monday. He ran an amazing 2:30:32.

I ran on some new trails today. I have run here once before.
Great place to run with awesome views. I stopped several
times to look around and take pictures. I still feel like
a tourist. I can't believe I live here!

Ute Pass Trail

7 Miles 1:11:00
9:30 am) Sunny & Windy
Was going to run at Waldo but the parking lot was full. I decided
to run at Ute Pass trail. Good decision I had the trail all to
myself. First time running this trail and it was difficult. It
starts out with a good amount of climbing. I went out and back
it was easier coming back for sure. My pace was very slow today.
I walked, hiked more than I would have like to.
