Year End Review

Ended the year with 2615 Miles versus 2163 last year.
Happy with these numbers. I thought I might hit 3000 this
year but never really worried about it. I didn't even know
how many miles I had for the year till Dec 23 when I added
them up.
I did 5 Marathons this year my most in a year.
I had a personal best at Houston Marathon 1/17/10 2:50:02
I ran a 2:57 trail marathon 4/17/10 2nd place overall.
I was pleased with this result.

I also did 2 50 mile trail runs and a 50k trail run.
Placed in the top 10 in all 3 of these. The 50k I was second

Had my best 10k time 35:52 6/12/10

So not a bad year at all. I look forward to 2011.
I turn 40 in March so will be a Master runner.
I hired a coach and think with his help I will PR again in
the Marathon. May 15, 2011 Cellcom Green Bay Marathon.

Other goal for 2011 is to improve on my Pikes Peak Marathon
results. I think living in Colorado now will give me a huge
advantage over my 2 previous attempts.

Happy New Year!

Waldo Canyon

7 Miles 57:26
144 HR average
10:00 am) 30's Sunny!
Second fastest time I have run this loop. I was pushing as hard as
I could. I have not worn my HR monitor on this trail before so was
curious as to what it would be. I thought it would be higher. Last
2 miles it was 153 average. I saw it hit 157 a couple times.
Cold and snow is headed this way. Not looking forward to it. We
might get 3-6" of snow and single digits temperatures for highs.

Pikes Peak Greenway s-n

10 Miles 1:10:05 7:00 average per mile
138 HR Average
10:00 am) mid to upper 30's Partly Sunny
Same run as yesterday. Only difference is that I capped my HR
at 130 for the first mile and 135-145 for the rest of the run.
I did good at not going over. Only 2 times it briefly hit 146.
I was surprised to see how low it was the first mile. Not sure
if altitude is a factor? It was always higher in Wisconsin.

Pikes Peak Greenway

5 Miles no time
1:00 pm) 40's Sunny!
Forgot my Garmin so no time. Funny how dependent I am to the
Garmin. I almost didn't run because I wouldn't be able to time
my run. I ran on the Pikes Peak Greenway so I knew the distance.
It's marked every half mile. I decided to run easy today since
I wouldn't know the pace anyway. Well running easier doesn't
mean it will be a easier run. I guess I'm used to running at a
certain pace. It felt harder to purposely run slower. A couple
times I would go to look at my wrist only to remember I didn't
have my watch on.

Waldo Canyon

Sunday 12/26/2010
7 Miles 57:34
12:20 pm) 40's Sunny!
Felt good. Second fastest time I have run this loop.

61 Miles for the week. Good week got a couple longer runs in.

Manitou Incline & Barr Trail

5.78 Miles
12:15 pm) mid 40's Sunny!
Merry Christmas Everyone!
25:19 for Incline. 3rd Best time.
Wore my HR monitor for the first time since moving to Colorado.
I guess I have been afraid to wear it fearing sky high Heart Rate.
Well I checked it just before starting going up the incline it was
74. It went up quickly once I started the work out. At the top it
was 156. It averaged 143 for the 25:19 work out. So not as bad as
I feared. My max is around 174 so I did not hit that.
I restarted it for the next 4.75 miles which was mostly down Barr
trail so it stayed low. It averaged 130 for this portion. I will
check it again this week on a normal flat run. I"m thinking it
will be 140's to 150's. Of course it depends on what pace I run.

Kind of a strange Christmas for me. My first in Colorado and away
from family & friends. Also I can't remember never having a white
Christmas. I don't mind that part though. I have seen plenty of
snow in my lifetime.

Pikes Peak Greenway

16 Miles 1:48:10 6:45 average per mile
12:15 pm)low 40's Sunny!
Good run today. My energy level was good for the entire run. I
had consistent pacing. My slowest mile was 6:56 fastest was
last mile but that was only because I pushed the last 2 miles.
Nice day weather wise chilly but perfect for running.

12:00 pm) Mid 50's!!!!! Awesome!!!!
What a difference a day makes in the weather and the way I feel.
I felt great from the start today. So I went with it and pushed
the pace. I ran the same course and distance as yesterday. My
time was almost 4 minutes faster.

Did not have the legs today. I had no energy. Coldest day I think
since I've moved here. Was not bad though I was dressed warm.

14.25 Miles 1:38:47 6:56 average per mile
Started out very sluggish and my breathing was labored. After
3.5 miles finally started to feel better. Was thinking about
cutting run short but decided to keep going. Not a great run
but glad I got it in.

pushed a bit too hard.

Friday 12/18/10
11.25 Miles 2:05:29
12:00 pm) mid 30's Sunny!
Ute Pass Trail, Longs Ranch Road, Barr Trail
This was a hard hike/run. Longs Ranch road is steep and it had
fresh snow making it slippery even with my shoes with screws in
them. I did not run much mostly hiked. Good workout didn't have
a lot of energy though.

44 Miles on the week. Down big time from last week. I took off
2 days this week as I needed it. Got to listen to your body!

Apt. to Garden of the Gods & back

9.5 Miles 1:06:18 6:59 average per mile
11:30 am) 20's Snow!
Ran in the snow and enjoyed it. Coldest day I have run in a
long time. I was actually over dressed though. Took another
day off yesterday. I'm feeling pretty tired this week. My
job and working at night is an adjustment that I'm still
trying to get used to. It's hard to fall asleep when it's
daylight out. Next week I only work 4 days so that will help.

Wednesday, December 15, 2010

Waldo Canyon

7 Miles 56:58
11:00 am) 50's Cloudy
Fastest I have run this loop. Previous best was 57:47 Nov. 22.
Very surprised I ran it this fast. I felt awful the first mile
and wanted to stop the run. By mile 4 I was feeling very strong
and pushed hard and ran some fast miles for this course.
Today is the last nice day for a few days. We are going to get
a snow storm tomorrow morning they say 3-6". By next week back
in the 50's. I love the winter here!

Pikes Peak Greenway

7 Miles 46:48 6:41 average per mile
12:00 pm) mid 30's Sunny!
Felt okay today considering 2 1/2 hour run yesterday. Run ended
up being a progression run with each mile getting faster. Last
mile was 6:09. Was chilly today but nice compared to what the
mid west is getting. Low 60's for tomorrow!
Great week mileage wise 73.50 miles. I think this is the most I
have done in a week since moving to Colorado.

Ute Pass Trail & Loop around Waldo Canyon & back Ute Pass Trail

15.25 Miles 2:28:00 9:42 average per mile
11:00 am) cool mid 30's Sunny & Windy
This was not much fun. I should have passed on this run but
wanted to get my long run in. I was tired from work and my
legs were not fresh at all. I really could not run any of
the hills today I was forced to power hike them. Hopefully
as time goes by these hills will get easier. My goal is to
do this run in the future with as little as walking as possible.

11 Miles 1:18:34 7:09 average per mile
12:00 pm) 50's Partly Sunny. Very Nice!
Ran around the garden and went up Rampart Range road for a
couple miles before turning around. Rampart Range road goes
for like 25 miles. It goes up to Woodland Park. I have not
driven it yet in my car. Not sure I would want to it was
kind of rough in some spots. My next vehicle will be a Jeep.

Manitou Incline & Barr Trail

10 Miles 1:40:32
12:00 pm)40's Sunny
25:32 Incline. No record this time still 3rd best time. I worked
9.25 hours last night so I was tired.
I continued up Barr trail to 9600 ft before turning back. Not much
snow up there. Trail was clear for the most part except a few
shaded sections. Pretty happy to get up high without dealing with
a lot of snow.
Great weather here in the 50's in Colorado Springs! I'm loving
it. It has been sunny almost everyday since September and I love
the sun!

Ute Pass Trail-Longs Ranch Road-Barr Trail

11.25 Miles 1:53:43
12:15 pm) 30's Sunny!

I was not feeling it today. I was tired and this route didn't
help any. Lots of climbing. I started in Manitou Springs memorial
park 6300 plus feet and I went up to just under 9000 ft before
heading down Barr trail.

Longs Ranch road was new for me and it was super hard. It had
some very steep sections. I had a 1 mile stretch where I hiked
the whole mile and my split was over 16 minutes! It was probably
a 45% incline plus a couple inches of snow.

Great day to be out. Sunny no wind and great views!

51.55 Miles for the week. Nor bad considering I worked 6 days.

Saturday, December 4, 2010

Manitou Incline & Barr Trail

5 Miles 52:14
10:30 am) 30 degrees sunny
24:36 Incline. New Best Time!!! I pushed very hard today. I
wanted to break the 25 minute barrier. I was 25:11 on Thursday
so I new only need 12 seconds. Glad to do it now rather than
later. Once the incline gets more snow and ice I'm sure my times
will slow. Today there was no ice and only a trace of snow. It
was chilly but perfect weather for it. I still wore shorts and
I was plenty warm. I got a little chilled at the top. Once I got
going again I was fine. After the incline I go up another
quarter of a mile or so before heading down Barr Trail. I had my
fastest descent as well today. My footing is much better than it
used to be. Coming down I was running 6:40's. Doesn't sound
very fast but the switch backs slow you down.

Apt. to Pikes Peak Green Way & Back

10 Miles 1:09:00 6:54 average per mile
9:15 am) 50's Sunny!
Decided to run earlier than later. I heard the forecast and it
was calling for very windy conditions. So I got the run in
before the wind came. It's now very windy and warm mid to upper
60's! Felt okay on the run but had to push pretty hard to run
the pace I ran.

Manitou Incline & Barr Trail

4.80 Miles 52:56
1:00 pm) 40's Sunny!
25:11 for the Incline. New best time! Best was 26:01 from just
last Friday. I don't know how I knocked off 50 seconds of my
best time. Today was strange it was the first time I have ever
been passed going up the incline. The guy that passed me started
behind me maybe 30 seconds or so and got to the top probably a
minute or two ahead of me. His time was probably 23:00 or under!
Not sure who he was. I was hoping he would stick around at the
top so I could talk to him. I have now taking 7 1/2 minutes off
my first trip up the incline August 13.

Incline Group Run New Season

12.57 Miles 1:58:20 9:25 average per mile
8:00 am) 30's - 40's Sunny!
I have been looking forward to this group starting up for
the last 3 months. The plan was go 2 hours. I went 1:05 out
before turning around and coming back the same way. I figured
I would run a bit faster coming back and I was right. Made it
back in 53:20. I think the course was much harder going out
so that's a big reason for the faster time coming back.
I was not real happy with how I ran. I really struggled on
some of the hills reducing me to hiking. It's early in the
season so no big deal. I now have something to gauge my
level of fitness. I have not really done any hilly long runs
so hopefully doing them once a week will pay off.
Today's route was up Ruxton Ave. to Ute Pass Trail to Longs
road over to Waldo Canyon and after 1.5 miles on Waldo Canyon
turned around and headed back.
44 Miles on the week. Lowest weekly mileage in a while. However
maybe my best week of running in months.

Pikes Peak Greenway

10 Miles 1:05:50 6:35 average per mile
11:15 am) 40's Sunny! Very Nice!
Felt good and decided to push the pace. I was going to run easy
but as usual I didn't. Happy with this run. I'm starting to run
faster at altitude. This would have been a good paced run for
me in Wisconsin. So I wonder if my fitness is better than before
I moved to Colorado. I would think I could run at least 15 seconds
per mile faster at sea level.

26:01 for Incline. Best time! My best was 26:30. I was shocked to

Yes that distance is correct course was short. Very frustrating
when you pay to run a 5k and they can't get the distance right.
I ran okay and better than my first 5k here a month ago or so
when I ran 20:11. Still can't seem to run fast here. I'm getting
stronger at longer runs but these short ones are hard! I know
what I need to do to get faster but have not committed to it yet
that would be track work 400's & 800's. I like trail running too
much to spend a lot of time at the track. When it gets closer to
my next goal race May 2011 I will be doing track on a regular

Bear Creek Park

7 Miles 1:01:36 8:48 average per mile
2:00 pm) mid 40's Sunny!
Only my second or third time running these trails. Some nice
single track just not enough miles of it for my liking. I tried
not to push the pace today. I'm feeling a bit tired from working
the last 2 nights stocking groceries. I've been off "work" for 4
months not counting my part time ebay sales. I like working at
night other than my sleeping schedule is off. The best thing is
I can still run during the day and not in the dark.

12:45 pm) 30's cold
Previous best was 58:50 from 11/10/2010.
I felt great! I knew I had a good shot at beating my best time.
I didn't expect to knock a minute off my best time from 12 days
earlier. Very happy to see I'm progressing. When I first moved
to Colorado and did this loop it was MUCH harder! I ran 1:08:15
on August 11. So in a little over 4 months I have improved 10:30!

Same run as yesterday but went north on trail. Felt okay for
the first 7 then turned around and headed back and had a head

ran faster coming back. The trail is slightly downhill coming
back so that probably offset the wind.

expect to have a good time. I started out feeling tired on the
hills. I walked more than usual on the steep sections. I guess
I'm getting faster at the flat sections and on the downs. My
footwork feels much better on the technical sections than when
I first started running here. Always nice to have an unexpected

10:15 am) mid 30's Sunny!
Took off yesterday because I felt I needed it. Thought today would
be a great run with the rest. I started out okay then started to
feel good from miles 3-7. After mile 7 it just fell apart. I had
less energy and was working harder and running slower. Was
planning on 16 miles but ended at 13. I didn't want to suffer
anymore. Not like I need the long runs right now anyways. My
next marathon is not till May.

also had a little bit of snow. I guess winter is here!

Decided to go further than I normally would have since it
was nice out. Legs still feel tired. They actually felt better
after 10 miles. I went north today on the trail because of a
light wind out of the north. I figured it would be a tail wind
coming back. Well didn't work out the wind turned and I ended
up with the head wind coming back. It wasn't that windy so
no big deal. Just made me work a little harder.

Very nice place to run. Trails were nice all single track.
Challenging trail with a good amount of hills. Got up to 7427 ft.
Low point was 6643 ft. We both were kind of tired on this run so
we didn't push too hard.

Unbelievably nice today! Is it really November? Will be much
colder next week so I'm enjoying it while I can. Did the
incline today and had a new best time 26:30 versus 26:48. I'm
pretty happy with that. Went on up the Barr trail to 9500 ft
before heading back down. Lots of people out on the trail
today. I can't blame them.

be surprised how bad I was today. Plus I have been pushing
the miles a bit this week. After the 400's I ran 4.25 miles
and my legs could feel the fatigue. I need to stick with the
track as much as I'm not liking it. It will get better!
Little depressing though in high school I ran these in 55
seconds and I was not what I would call a dedicated runner.
Where has my speed gone? Will it come back?

Mesa Valley Trails & Manitou

4.75 Miles 38:48 8:10 average per mile
11:00 am) low 40's sunny
Wore my new New Balance trail shoes MT 101. I love them. I have
the 100's and they didn't change much same feel.

8.25 Miles 57:12 6:56 average per mile
5:00 pm) upper 40's
Ran it harder than I wanted to. I would like to run these at
8:00 pace. I start out fast and then just keep going with it.
I have been running too hard this week. I'm only trying to
build my mileage up not run fast. Not working out to good yet.
Saturday and Sunday need to be easy! Tomorrow going to try
a few 400's. Don't want to over do it.

Colorado Running Company

12.23 Miles 7:29 average per mile
5:00 pm) 50's
Ran 5 miles before the group run. Ran with Brooks, James and
Christoff not sure on spelling. We all agreed we would take
it easy tonight. Well that was true for the first half of the
run. We ran sub 7's the last 3 miles. Need a easy day tomorrow.

Pikes Peak Greenway

10 Miles 1:07:33 6:45 average per mile
2:15 pm) mid 60's Sunny! Windy!

Went North on the trail to fight the head wind so I would
have a tail wind on the way back. My goal was 10 miles no
plan on what pace I would run. I noticed my pace was getting
faster every mile so that became the goal to keep running
faster each mile. First 5 had a pretty good head wind.
I still managed to keep each mile faster. Mile 5 was 6:52.
When I turned around it felt easier mile 6-6:26 mile-7 6:23
mile-8 6:18 mile 9-6:34 hill mile 10-6:19.

I'm happy with this run it's probably the fastest 10 miler
I have done since moving here. Plus I ran pretty hard last
night so probably could have done better if fresh.

I think I need to do more longer runs and more runs that
are basically flat like this one. This is how I will get
in marathon shape for flat courses at or near sea level.

Trinity Brewing Company

8.16 Miles 59:34 7:18 average per mile
6:00 pm) low 50's
Ran from Trinity to Garden of the Gods and back. Small
turnout again. I was the only one doing the 8 mile run.
I ran the first 2 miles with a few runners. Pace was
slow so picked up the pace as soon as I was on my own.
I ended up running pretty hard. It was getting dark and
I was by myself so I had motivation to push. I got
startled by a huge mule deer he had a very large rack.
Thinking I might not run with this group anymore. The
group gets smaller every week and it's getting dark so
early. I can run earlier in the day when it's light

Mesa Rd. & Mesa Valley Trails

7 Miles 55:01 7:51 average per mile
2:45 pm) low 60's Sunny!
Explored some more new trails. Took it easy didn't worry about
pace. Okay week. Got a track work out in a race and got my
miles up a bit 58.4. Race was a disappointment but will learn from
it. Goal is to keep building my base. I will do another short
race or two yet this year plus a half marathon in December.

Creepy Crawl 5k & Hike up Barr Trail

15.5 Miles total
1 mile warm up
3.1 5k 20:19 3rd Overall 9:00 am) sunny low 50's
12:00 pm) 60's Hiked/Run with friend from WI.
11.5 Miles Up Barr Trail to Barr Camp and back down.

So I did my first 5k of the year and first one at altitude 7200 ft.
I really had a terrible race. I started out too fast for my current
fitness. First mile was 5:50 and I was totally winded after that
mile 2 was 6:27 and slowed even more at mile 3 6:35. Lots of work
to do. I need to work on speed and endurance!

Afternoon hiked up the some of the Incline and over to Barr Trail.
Dan and I went up to Barr Camp before heading down. We stopped
in and met the care takers. Very nice people! A husband and wife
take care of Barr Camp. Interesting story they are both ultra
runners having run many 100 mile races.

Mesa Valley Trails

4 Miles 30:35 7:38 average per mile
2:30 pm) Upper 70's WARM! LOVE IT!
Ran on these trails Wednesday night for the first time. Wanted
to go back and run them again in the day light. Lots of trails
here going off in all directions. Not sure how many miles of
trails are here. Today was not the day to run a lot of miles.
I'm doing a 5k in the morning. Next week will do a longer run
here. This is very close to my apartment 1.4 miles. So very
handy for me. I will run to the trail head next time. Weather
was fantastic! I was actually pretty warm but didn't mind at
all I will take all the warm days I can.

Pueblo Track

9.5 Miles
Went down to Pueblo with Rich for a track workout. My first in
Colorado. The track is at 4800 ft. so a bit lower than the 6200ft
I live at. We did 2 mile warm up. We did 2 sets of 600-400-200.
600-1:59, 400-77, 200-35
600-1:59, 400-76, 200-34
I felt pretty good except for the first 600 I think my system
went in shock from the faster than normal turn over.
After the workout we did a 5 mile easy run on some nice trails.

Wednesday, October 27, 2010

Colorado Running Company

7-8 Miles around 1 hour.
6:00 pm) low 40's chilly
Finally met Brooks tonight. Ran with him, Shawn and others.
We took a new route tonight that was awesome. It's actually
very close to my apartment but I didn't know about it. I will
be back soon to explore it more.
Not sure on mileage or time tonight. I stopped my watch
briefly at 4 miles and forgot to restart my watch.

Waldo Canyon

7 Miles 1:05:00
1:00 pm) mid 40's cool & windy
Took Rich on a tour of Waldo Canyon. He had never run it
before. I think he was impressed with the course. It really
has it all steep climbs, fast sections, sharp switch backs,
technical spots, great views of Pikes Peak. It's a great
place to run!

Monday, October 25, 2010

Trinity Brewing Company

8.39 Miles 1:13:00 8:42 average per mile
6:00 pm) low 40's windy cold!
Small turnout tonight. The weather was pretty bad. Today was
very windy and a cold front came through and it's cold. Later
in the week looks like a nice warm up. Saturday is going to
be low 70's! I am doing a 5k Saturday so that will be nice
weather for it.

2 Miles 16:15
11:45 am)
Decided to check out the health club at my apartment club house.
They have two treadmills, a few ellipticalls and some weights.
The first treadmill I tried didn't work. So I ran on the older
treadmill. I only went two miles just to try it out. At exactly
two miles the power went out. Good timing I was just going to
hit the stop button.
Working on my 2011 Race Schedule. I will probably add or make
changes to it.
These are for sure though
May 15 Cellcom Green Bay Marathon
June 12 Garden of the Gods 10 Miler
July 17 Barr Trail Mountain Race
August 22 Pikes Peak Marathon
October 2 Bear Chase Trail Run 50K

Manitou Incline & Barr Trail

A Little bit of snow on Pikes Peak

Some of my running shoes I'm currently using. Ordered another pair last night because I'm getting low.

4.61 Miles 54:00
12:15 pm)partly sunny 50's
Second best time on the incline 26:54 only 6 seconds off my best.
I'm happy with the time I have not done the incline in at least
3 weeks and coming off a marathon.

4.11 Miles 32:43 7:58 average per mile
7:00 pm) upper 40's
Full Moon Run. We ran into the Garden of the Gods and back.
After wards had food and snacks. Good run in the dark! They
do this run only once a month. My first time running it.

Bear Creek Park

6 Miles 46:36 7:45 average per mile
4:30 pm) low 50's cloudy
First time I have run here. Not sure what took me so long to
run here. It's only 3.2 miles from my apartment. Good trails
and ran on some nice single track.
Ran in my New Balance 100's. I like these shoes a lot. I like
the fact you can run long runs in them. I have used them for
a trail marathon and a 50k with no problems. They recently
updated the shoe to 101's. I should buy another pair of the
100's before there all gone.

My place to Garden of the Gods & back

10 Miles 1:09:02 6:54 average per mile
1:30 pm) partly sunny 50
This was a hard run! I felt pretty bad for most of it yet I
pushed the pace for some reason. I need to listen to myself
better just last night I said I would take it easy the rest
of the week. My stomach didn't feel great. I don't think I
gave my lunch enough time to digest. Good news is I feel
I'm recovering very fast from the marathon.

Wednesday, October 20, 2010

Colorado Running Company

6.88 Miles 49:23 7:11 average per mile
6:00 pm) 60's Warm!
Feeling pretty good. Not too sore anymore. Legs still feel
heavy though. I'm really looking forward to building my
mileage up but trying to be smart and let my body recover
first. I think I will hold back the rest of this week and
starting next week start the building process. I have no
goals as far as a number. I usually run no more than 50
miles a week. I want to run more than that since I have no
races upcoming of any signifigance. I would like to get
up to 100 mile week but that will take some time.

Tuesday, October 19, 2010

Waldo Canyon

7 Miles 1:00:31
3:00 pm) mid 60's Sunny!
Have not run here in a month! Wow how time flyes. I felt
very good other than my quads are still pretty sore. I was
kind of surprised to run my second fastest time here. It
still was 1:25 slower than my best. Beautiful day today
I'm enjoying them while they last.

Trinity Brewing Company

4.50 Miles 32:57 7:21 average per mile
6:00 pm) cool upper 40's
Decided to run after all. I felt better as the day went on.
Still pretty sore but I think the run helped. I only ran
4.5 miles so I didn't over due it. My pace was faster than
I was planning. A new runner showed up tonight and she is
very fast. She is on the elite army team. She is training
for the CIM Marathon in December. I asked her what her goal
was and she said 2:45. I almost fell over. She wants to
qualify for the Olympic Trials.

Denver Marathon Race Report

26.2 Miles 3:01:53 6:57 average per mile
7:00) am mid 40's start warming to upper 50's finish
40th Overall 4th Age (35-39)
Kind of a stressful start. I almost didn't make it to my corral
on time. I made it by like 30 seconds. Then the gun went off and
I didn't have my GPS signal yet. After a minute or two finally
got the signal and hit the start button. I started out pretty
quick. I was running 6:40's. My goal was 7:00 miles till I got
warmed up. So I went with it and decided to just run. Around
mile 6 GZ flies past me and says hello. He was doing the half
marathon and started in corral 4. He did awesome today 1:20 and
second master. Later saw him again as he was a spectator at mile
19. He cheered me on. I was not feeling good though at that point.
I had a bad side ache and it lasted for 4 miles before going away.
I went through the half at 1:29:44 so I had a shot as sub 3 but
knew it would be tough. I ran pretty good second half just not
good enough to do it today. My slowest mile was 24 7:08. So not
bad at all considering how tired and slow I felt at the end.
My loose goal today was 3:00-3:05 so I made my goal. This was
also my first road marathon at altitude so didn't know how much
that would effect me. Not sure how much it did. I think my 50k
from 2 weeks ago had some effects though. My legs didn't feel
So this wraps up my season for 2010. I had a busy year 5 marathons
2 50 milers and a 50k. Most I have ever done. Time to recover and
get ready for 2011. I'm excited for it! Will turn 40 in March so
looking to place at some races as a master.

Gold Camp Road & North Cheyenne Creek Trail

5.75 Miles 1:02:27 Run/Hike
2:00 pm)upper 60's Sunny! Nice!

Started at Gold Camp road and ran .70 miles to North Cheyenne
Creek Trail. The trail gets steep from this point. I walked/
hiked most of it going out. This trail is also known as 7
bridges. You cross the creek several time going over 7 wooden
bridges. I went out 3 miles before turning around. Got lost
a couple times as I didn't know which way the trail went.
I was at 9150 ft at turn around. When I started I was at 7500
ft. I ran a bit on a trail called Pipe Line Trail. It was nice
not sure how far it goes.

Pikes Peak Greenway

6 Miles 40:59 6:50 average per mile
3:30 pm) 60 Sunny

Wanted to do 2 miles hard to work on some turn over. I have not
done any speed or tempo really since moving to Colorado. So I did
2 mile warm up 2 miles speed then 2 mile cool down. I did about
what I thought I would maybe a bit better. It was very hard
though my breathing was very labored. I will run easy tomorrow
then take off Friday and Saturday. Race is Sunday morning at 7:00.
Not looking to run any certain time. This will be my first road
marathon at altitude so will be interesting. The only plan I have
at this point is go out around 7 minute pace. I will then see how it
feels and adjust one way or the other from that point.

Today's run)
Mile 1 7:15
Mile 2 7:14
Mile 3 5:57
Mile 4 6:05

Incline & Barr Trail - Ute Valley Park

4 Miles 11:00 am) not sure on time
Hiked up the Manitou Incline then hiked down Barr trail
with Lori.

9.25 Miles 6:00 pm)1:26:00
Ran with the Trinity group. We did 6 miles on the trails at
Ute Valley Park. First time on these trails. Some nice trails
to run on. Pace was slow as we had to do some rock climbing to
get to the top. Afterwards Rich and I went back out and ran 3.25
miles on Garden of the Gods Road.

Garden of the Gods

10.52 Miles 1:25:32 8:08 average per mile
10:00 am) 60's Sunny! Nice Day!
Ran with Rich. Started in Manitou Springs. Headed towards the
Garden of the Gods. Went up Ridge Road and it killed me. This
road is steep and long. I struggled to keep my feet moving
and walked briefly to catch my breath. The rest of the run
was hard for me I couldn't really recover from the hill.
It's all good though I need to struggle to get better.
No pain no gain right?
Taken tomorrow off I need it! I have run everyday since my
50k last Sunday. I feel good just a bit fatigued. Next week
I need to take it easy I'm running the Denver Marathon on

Second time running this road and wanted to make it to the
second tunnel this time. The second tunnel is just before
the 5 mile mark. Unlike the first tunnel this tunnel is open
and you can go through it. Pictures above. First 5 miles is
slightly up hill 7500 ft to 8400 ft. My miles were in the
8:30's range. Coming back it's slightly downhill and I was
running 6:30's and pushed hard last mile for a 6:06 mile.

8.2 Miles 1:00:56 7:26 average per mile
6:00 pm) cool 60's
First time running with this group. About 25 runners showed up.
I was looking for a easy recovery run as I'm pretty sore from
yesterday. We started out easy 8:07 first mile but I was having
a hard time catching me breath. I settled down a bit by mile 2
7:40 pace. We ran to the Garden of the Gods and ran some of the
roads that go through the park. The last mile is down hill and
felt good to run fast without working too hard. mile 8 was 6:07.
So I pretty much didn't run this as a recovery run. Oh well I
felt okay at the end and no worse than when I started.

The Bear Chase 50k Trail Race Report

31.1 Miles 4:16:54 8:13 average per mile 2nd Overall
6:30 am) cool at start 40's warmed up into the 60's sunny.
Lakewood, Colorado Beer Creek Lake Park
Well not a bad day at all. I had no goals going into this race.
Just wanted to finish. I was not confident in my training leading
up to this race. I'm still adjusting to living in Colorado and
dealing with the altitude. Also normally I do several long runs
before an ultra and I didn't get them in.
The race started and I went out easy. Actually almost everyone
went out easy. First mile was 8:49. It was still pretty dark
and chilly so I think that was the reason. I wore a singlet, arm
warmers, shorts and gloves. I shed the gloves and arm warmers
after the first loop. The course was 2 loops plus a shorter
loop that the 10k runners ran. I got into a okay groove after
a few miles and actually pulled away from the pack. The course
has a few hill climbs and I just didn't have the legs to run them
I walked all the steeper hills. I think it helped me in the long
run though.
I started the second loop and I was feeling weak mentally and
physically. I decided I should back of the pace and just run at
whatever pace feels good. This helped and by the end of the
second loop I was running better. Note first loop and a half I
made 3 restroom stops. Not sure why? I also used the restroom
3 times before the race. I didn't even drink that much. I need
to figure that out. Nutrition wise I also didn't do very well
I only took 2 gels and a few honey stingers. I did however eat
bananas and oranges at the aid stations. I also drank some coke
at a couple.
The last loop the 10k distance loop I ran as hard as I could.
I still at this point didn't know what position I was in. We
started out with the 50 milers so I never took count. With
about 5 miles to go one of the volunteers said I was 6 minutes
back. That's allot with 5 miles. I kept pushing. I passed a few
runners but I think they were half marathoners that now were
also on course. At around mile 27 I see some kids and two
women. I get by the kids okay and go to pass the women on the
left and at the last second the lady moves to the left. I hit
her and lose my balance and fall down. No big deal I got up
and kept going. It was a bit frustrating though.
I arrive at the final aid station at about mile 28 and the
volunteer says I'm in third place. This is the first time all
day I now my position. I was surprised since I didn't feel
I was that far up. I figure that's it I will finish in third
and be happy with that. I keep pushing and see a runner ahead
didn't know for sure if he was a 50k runner or not. I get
closer and sure enough he was. I remembered running with him
earlier but lost him due to a bathroom stop. I passed him
and finished in second. I found out that I was less than 2
minutes behind the winner. Those bathroom stops really cost
Really pleased considering everything. I feel I have lots
more room for improvement so that's exciting for the future.
I loved this race and it was done so well for a first time
event. I plan on going back next year.

Ran with Kim. Kim is from Wisconsin and here for work
a few days. So I figured this would be a nice place to
take her. She really enjoyed the run. I think the
altitude affected her but she did very good.

4.87 Miles 36:51 7:34 average per mile
6:00 pm) 70's Nice!
Ran with the Colorado Running Company group. Felt good!
Ran easy the first 2 miles then picked up the pace. Ran
with a new guy Paul. He's in the Army nice guy.

4 Miles 51:24
9:15 am) 70's Warm!
27:19 second fastest time on the incline. It was hot already.
The weather has been very warm here. We have been running way
above normal for some time now. Plus it's dry here. In the last
35 days we have had only 9/100 Th's of an inch. I like the dry
sunny weather so I'm not complaining but it's high fire danger
around here. The weekend looks cooler with chances of some rain.
I hope Sunday is cooler. I have my 50k race up in Lakewood.

Section 16 & Palmer Trail

6.25 Miles 1:01:03
9:00 am) 60's Sunny!
This is a tough run. The first 1.75 miles is climbing. Then
it's a flat to downhill run. It loops back to my car. This
is close to where I live it's only 3.5 miles each way. I will
do this one more.
Finally got internet! I have been using other sources. This
will be much better.

Hiked with Lori. I met Lori last week Monday at Waldo Canyon.
We started out going up the Incline then we continued up Barr

Had a good hike and got to know Lori better. We will probably
do some more hikes in the near future. Nice to have some

it's hilly the last mile. Did flea market earlier in the
day so surprised to run this well.

1 Mile Incline 28:18. Not very good today. I pushed hard just
didn't have it today. Forgot my music. I think that really
helps me on the incline. Ran down Barr trail didn't feel very
fast either. I think I ran too hard Wednesday night. Still a
great workout no matter the time. I'm thinking I should
probably do the incline 2 times a week. I will wait though till
after my 2 upcoming races.

Colorado Springs Streets

Wednesday 9/23/2010
5 Miles 34:10 6:50 average per mile
5:00 pm) Cloudy, drizzle
Ran some hilly streets near my apartment. Felt good for
the most part. The hills would get me winded but I would
recover quickly on the flats and downs. Finally got a
small amount of rain we sure need it here.

Jack Quinn's Running Group

6 Miles 42:11 7:02 average per mile
5:45 pm) upper 70's
Ran with the Jack Quinn group. Still have not met anyone in this
group. The problem is the group is too large. Felt okay not great.
My breathing was more labored than it should be. I never feel good
on these Tuesday runs for some reason.

Wore my new Brooks Launch shoes. I liked them they feel
light and cushioned. I will wear these probably at the
Denver marathon. So my run went very good. I have run
this before but not near this fast. My last 3 miles
were all under 6:20 pace.

Monday, September 20, 2010

Waldo Canyon

7 Miles not sure on the time.
9:45 am) sunny warm 70's
I didn't feel as strong as last weeks run here however I was
running about the same time as last week. I did walk more
but when running I was a bit faster. I was at mile 4.3 when
I saw a lady on the trail and she was waving at me. At first
I thought she was just saying hi. Then I heard her say stop.
I stopped and she explained to me that there was the guy
hiding in the bushes wearing camouflage and that he creeped
her out. She did not feel comfortable getting back to her
car and asked if I would walk with her. I was happy to do
it. I'm more concerned with someones safety than having to
end my run.

Garden of the Gods

9 Miles 1:19:00 8:46 average per mile
8:30 am) 70's Sunny!
Once again I found some new trails today. I'm still finding new
ones here. I have not figured out a route to run yet. I just
jump from one trail to another. I get a little lost sometimes
but I always find my way back.
My pace was not fast today but I find these trails are hard to
run fast. Sometimes I get lost because I can't tell which way
the trail goes. I don't think they are marked that well at times.
Will be working at the flea market again this weekend so don't
look to do many miles.

Bear Creek Lake Park, Lakewood, Colorado

14 Miles 1:54:03 8:09 average per mile
10:15 am) Sunny warm!
Drove 73 miles each way today to get my long run in on a course
I will be racing October 3. Well lets just say it didn't go as
planned. I was looking to do at least 20 miles and up to 25.
Well I had a few problems. First off I lost my map I was carrying
so I never really new if I was actually running any of the race
course. The course has 3 river crossings and I never crossed any
of them. I saw a few areas that might have been the crossing but
decided not to. I figured I would keep my shoes dry.
Second I started too late. I was sweating pretty good at mile 3
already. I knew I was in trouble. I was running in some open
sections and I could feel the sun just draining me.
Third I was dehydrated! I didn't realize how bad I was till mile
12 I had to stop and refill my bottle and I couldn't drink it
fast enough. You wouldn't think in only 12 miles it would be a
factor. Like I said though the sun was draining me and I should
have drank more.
Overall I'm still glad I drove up there. At least I know how to
get there on race morning and I'm pretty sure I ran some of the
course. My biggest mistake was just starting too late. If I
would have started at 8:00 I'm sure it would have been a whole
different run.

Manitou Incline & Barr Trail

5 Miles 58:41
10:00 am) upper 60's Sunny!
I felt better this time doing the incline. I went out a bit
easier for the first part and that seemed to help me get
into a better rhythm. I ended up with my fastest time 26:48
versus 27:32 2 weeks ago. I then ran down Barr Trail. I don't
want to go down all those steps. The trail is much more fun!
Tomorrow I plan on doing my last long run before tapering a
bit for my 50k October 3. I'm going to run it at Bear Creek
Lake Park, Lakewood. This is where the race is so I want to
get familiar with the course.

Red Rock Canyon & Jack Quinn Group Run

5.5 Miles 52:19 9:30 average per mile
Red Rock Canyon
10:00 am)
Ran on some new trails today and actually I started out on
what I thought was a trail but was just a dried up creek bed
I realized this when it came to a sudden stop. I eventually
found some trails and had a fun run. My hip was bothering me
a bit so didn't push pace.

5.60 Miles 38:49 6:56 average per mile
Jack Quinn Group
5:15 pm)
Felt good pushed the pace a bit.

Waldo Canyon

7 Miles 59:05 8:26 average per mile
10:20 am cloudy Nice Day!
Took of this weekend. No running! Saturday was planned and
Sunday I just didn't have the energy. Plus I think I needed
the time off.
Today's run was at Waldo Canyon. I had not run here in two weeks.
So I was looking forward to the run. I had a new strategy today
on the hills and that was small steps and high breathing cadence.
This worked well. Before I would try to take big steps and would
wear out quickly. This way I'm in low gear and can keep going
longer. I still walked briefly a few times but nothing like before.
Here is a comparison just to show my improvements since my first
run here
August 11, 1:08:15
August 28, 1:04:25
August 30, 1:04:39, 1:07:40

Pikes Peak Greenway (South)

17 Miles 2:00:23 7:05 average per mile
8:00 am) 60's sunny
Started at Monument Valley Park and headed south. I felt really
good after the first mile. I always struggle the first mile till
I get into my rhythm. I went out 8.5 miles and headed back. I
felt great until the turnaround. After that every mile just got
slower and slower. Also at mile 10 my hip stated to bug me. It
kind of went away and I forgot about it. The last mile it hurt
again and was much worse. I could hardly run the last half mile.
When I got home I took a couple Aleve. My hip feels much better.
I think it's okay. I'm wondering if it's the shoes. They have
high mileage on them that could be part of the reason. Also I
think my body needs a day off. So tomorrow I will take off.
Here is my splits just to show how bad it was in the second
half of the run versus the first. Not sure why I feel apart so
bad. I didn't feel like I was pushing to hard the first half.

1- 7:10 9- 7:12
2- 6:46 10- 7:04
3- 6:41 11- 7:13
4- 6:47 12- 7:13
5- 6:48 13- 7:12
6- 6:52 14- 7:14
7- 6:56 15- 7:16
8- 7:00 16- 7:25
17- 7:32

Manitou Incline & Barr Trail

4.5 Miles 1:00:13
1 Miles Incline 28:38
9:30 am) mid 60's Sunny!
I didn't feel great today for some reason. I was out of breath
the whole time going up the incline. I was 1:06 slower than last
weeks attempt. Not bad I guess considering how I felt. Plus I
forgot my mp3 player and that probably would have helped.
Then I went down Barr trail and I still felt flat. Oh well not
every run is going to go the way you want.

Colorado Running CO.

4.75 Miles 40:11 8:27 average per mile.
6:00 pm)
Rich and Dale did not show up so I ran with GW. The pace was
slower than I'm used to but sometimes it's good to have a
easy run. GW is a older guy but does some serious amount of
racing. He recently did the double! Pikes Peak Ascent and
the Pikes Peak Marathon. One of the guys that works at the
store was the winner at the American Discovery Trail Marathon
on Monday. He ran an amazing 2:30:32.

Garden of the Gods

7 Miles 1:04:45 9:14 average per mile
10:45 am) 70's Sunny
I ran on some new trails today. I have run here once before.
Great place to run with awesome views. I stopped several
times to look around and take pictures. I still feel like
a tourist. I can't believe I live here!

5.38 Miles 36:47 6:50 average per mile
5:45 pm)
Ran with the Jack Quinn group. Pushed the pace a bit.

Ute Pass Trail

7 Miles 1:11:00
9:30 am) Sunny & Windy
Was going to run at Waldo but the parking lot was full. I decided
to run at Ute Pass trail. Good decision I had the trail all to
myself. First time running this trail and it was difficult. It
starts out with a good amount of climbing. I went out and back
it was easier coming back for sure. My pace was very slow today.
I walked, hiked more than I would have like to.
