Waldo Canyon

14 Miles 2:12:19 2 loops
Loop 1 1:04:39 9:14 average per mile
Loop 2 1:07:40 9:40 average per mile
11:30 am) 70's Sunny & Windy
I bit off more than I could chew today. I guess I'm not
ready for higher mileage yet unless I do it on a flat
bike path. The first loop went pretty good. I started
the second loop and my legs felt like they had nothing
left. I pushed as hard as I could but walked more on the
second loop. When I finished I was very thirsty even
though I carried my water bottle. I drank like 40 oz.
in a matter of minutes.
So what did I learn today. I'm not ready for higher
mileage on terrain that involves climbing. Build my
mileage on easier terrain and slowly build up on the
harder stuff.

Bear Creek Regional Park East

6 Miles 48:53 8:08 average per mile
9:00 am) 60's Sunny
First time running here. I did a 3 mile loop 2 times. The
trail was non technical but had some good hill climbs.
I walked a few times but getting stronger and walking less.
Legs were feeling a bit fatigue from yesterdays run at Waldo.
I'm looking to start building my mileage back up to where it
was in Wisconsin. It's taking me some time to adjust but I
feel I'm on my way.

Waldo Canyon

7 Miles 1:04:25 9:12 average per mile
5:30 pm) 80 degrees partly sunny
Second time running this loop. I did a little better pace wise.
I was about 30 seconds a mile faster. I did take a good fall
though. I got a few scratches on my leg. Nothing serious just
deep enough to bleed some. I caught a tree root and went
flying. My water bottle went down a steep drop off and I had
to climb down to get it. I really need to watch my footing here.
It's much more technical that what I'm used to running on.
I did good following the trail but made one wrong turn. I quickly
realized my mistake and retraced back to where I went off.
Good run even though I had a bad day other wise. Thank goodness
for running it's the best stress reliever I know of.

Manitou Incline & Barr Trail

4 Miles 52:57
10:40 am) Sunny 70's
1 Mile Manitou Incline 29:32/ August 13, 32:41... 3:09 faster
3 Miles Barr Trail 23:25 7:48 average per mile
August, 13 27:44 4:19 faster
Nice improvements in 2 weeks. Not sure if it's I'm acclimating
or just pushed harder or both.
Got a blister on my heel today. Not sure why. I guess my foot
is slipping in my shoes. I wore the Cascadia's not liking them
as much as my Brooks ASR Adrenalines.
Beautiful day here! I'm loving COLORADO!!!

Colorado Running Company

8 Miles or so 58:00
6:00 pm) upper 70's sunny
First time running with the Colorado Running Company group.
Good turn out I would say 30 or so. We started out pretty
slow then 2 guys picked up the pace so I went with them.
We went out 30:00 then turned around and headed back. We
made it back in 28:00 minutes. Not sure on distance tonight
but I'm sure it was close to 8 miles.

Uintah & Pikes Peak Greenway

8 Miles 57:01 7:07 average per mile
4:10 pm) cool & sunny
Legs felt a bit heavy today more so than yesterday. Must be that
D.O.M.S. (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) Once I got going though
it worked out pretty good. The last mile was very hard. I don't
think it had a flat spot it was either up or down. Good training
for me though. I want to focus more on hills and I live in a
great spot for that. I look forward to seeing if or how much
I can improve training here versus Wisconsin. One thing for sure
I have a lot more time on my hands to train. No job yet. Not
looking very hard either.

Uintah & Mesa Rd

5 Miles 34:58 7:00 average per mile
5:40 pm) cloudy and cool
I didn't plan on running today but I felt great and decided
why not. I started running and everything felt great. I could
feel my blister on my foot but otherwise all was good.
I did have one fall yesterday towards the top on my way down
I slid of a boulder and scraped my arm and leg. Today I
noticed my tricep muscle is very sore I must have used it
to try to catch myself. My water bottle saved my hand from
being very scratched. My bottle has some good scratches on it.
I had glove but never put them on. I planned on putting them
on towards the top but I never thought of it. I think I was
a zombie towards the top with lack of oxygen and pushing to
my limits.
I'm already thinking ahead to my next race. I think it will
be a 50k The Bear Chase Trail Run. Lakewood Colorado Oct 3.
I need to get training it's only 40 days away.

Pikes Peak 2010 Marathon Report

26.2 Miles 5:42:22
3:08:26 ascent 30th Place at the top.
2:33:56 descent 95th Place overall
Tough day for me. I had a good ascent I was happy with it. It all
literally went downhill with the downhill. After a few miles down
from the top I started to feel sick. I think it was altitude
sickness. I was light headed and dizzy. My stomach was not doing
well either. I was forced to walk for a long stretch even having
to stop and sit under a shade tree for a bit to get my bearings
back. I finally felt better with about 4 miles to go. I was able
to run it in. I was happy to run again after walking for so long.
I'm just glad I was able to finish. I really wanted to stop!
My friend Mike ran this race today as well he had the same
problem got sick on the way down and had to walk. He finished
though and that's a great accomplishment in itself.
Finally got to meet GZ today. Been following his blog for a few years now. He did awesome today.
First master and 12th overall.
Way to go George!

Pikes Peak Greenway

7 Miles 50:53 7:16 average per mile
7:15 am) upper 60's sunny
Mike and I ran the Pikes Peak Greenway path this morning.
We didn't want any hills and this is about as flat as they
come. Will take off now till race day morning Sunday.
Hope to have a good race. I feel pretty good. Don't have
a real time goal other than finishing. I think that's Mikes
goal as well.

Jack Quinn's Running Club

3 Miles
6:00 pm) Upper 70's
Ran with the Jack Quinn's running group run. Lots of runners I
would say hundreds. I didn't find anyone to run with. So I just
ran my own pace. It was nice though to be running with so many
runners. Not sure on my time or pace. I forgot my watch. I was
moving pretty good though upper 6's I would say. Not sure if I
will run with this group again. I think it's so big I would
have a hard time meeting anyone. I prefer smaller groups where
when someone new shows up everyone notices.

Unitah & Mesa

6 Miles 43:36 7:16 average per mile
9:30 am) 60's Cloudy & Humid
Legs didn't feel great today. Maybe still tired from yesterday.
Plus it was humid today. I didn't bring my camera today. I wish
I would have I saw a mule deer buck with a large rack. He crossed
the street right in front of me. It was a cool sight. The run
I ran today was not easy it was 3 miles out and back. The 3 out
is up hill for most of it. I did have a nice 3 miles to finish
though.

Pikes Peak Barr Trail

6 Miles 1:22:14 13:50 average per mile
8:00 am) Sunny 40's
Carpooled to the summit with some of the runners from the
Incline Club. It was a cloudy morning in Manitou Springs.
Once we reached the top of Pikes though it was sunny. It
was chilly 40's but felt good. We ran 3 miles down Barr
Trail and then 3 miles back up. I ran 30:05 for the 3 miles
down and 52:09 for the 3 miles back up. I ran good going
down but soon as I turned around and tried to run back up
my lungs said no. So I basically hiked the last 3 miles with
an occasional run when it was not too steep.
After the run some of the members from the Incline Club
worked on the trail. Moving rocks of the trail and what not.
I moved a few rocks. I didn't have any tools so I couldn't
do much. It was a great day for sure. I love the views from
up there.

Bike Ride

10 Miles Biking
No running today. I decided to get my bike out and do some
scouting. First time this year I have rode my bike. It was
fun but not as fun as running! I put on my new wireless
bike computer and it was right on with my Garmin 405.
I think I had 10.02 on the bike computer and 10.0 on the
Garmin close enough!
Afterwards went to the Colorado Springs flea market and
walked around. I didn't find anything exciting to buy.
Not much else going on today just relaxing.

Manitou Incline & Barr Trail

4 Miles Total 1:00:35
1 Miles Incline 32:41
3 Miles Down Barr Trail 27:44
10:30 am) Sunny!
Been wanting to try the incline and finally had a chance to
do it today. It is way harder than I expected. I started
out running for the first minute or so but quickly realized
this was not going to work. So I hiked the rest of it.
It was very steep in some sections my legs were burning.
When I finally made it to the top I decided no way was I
going back down that. I found a trail that hooked back up
with Barr trail and ran down that. Smart decision on my part.
This was a great workout and I will do it again. I guess I
don't need a stair stepper I have one a short drive from
my apartment.

Incline Club Barr Trail

5 Miles 51:10
5:45 pm) 70's
Parked at Memorial Park walked/ran with a few other runners
to Hydro St. The actual workout started from Hydro St. We
did 1 minute on 1 minute off for 20 minutes up Barr Trail.
I was sucking air big time. After the 20 minutes we jogged
back down to Intermann Trail and did 8 hill repeats. These
were for 30 seconds each. I would walk back down the hill
then turn around and run back up. Then Dan and I ran the
Intermann trail back to Memorial Park. It was a good workout
for sure plus I even met a few people so that's good.
Sunday I plan on joining them again. We will car pool to the
summit and run a few miles then we will work on the trail for
a couple of hours.

Red Rock Canyon

4.15 Miles 37:32 9:03 average per mile
7:20 pm) upper 60's Sunny!
Second time running here but was on all new trails. I parked in
the main parking lot this time. I started out on the Mesa trail.
It was non technical but was a steady climb for at least a mile.
I got winded a few times and had to walk. It's really hard to
start a run with a hill climb when you are not used to altitude.
I then got on a technical trail and really had to watch my footing
lots of rocks. See picture. I only ran 4 miles today because I
plan on running tonight with the Incline Club for the first time.

Waldo Canyon

7 Miles 1:08:15 9:47 average per mile
6:20 am) Sunny & Cool low 60's

Trail starts at 7100 ft. and climbs to over 8100 ft. at the
halfway point. So yes I was walking some of the first 3
miles. Trail is challenging you have to watch your footing.
I stumbled a couple times but didn't go down. Trail was easy
to follow except a couple times I got off course. I will do
better next time.

I'm really enjoying these trails here in Colorado Springs.
This after all is why I moved here! Pictures from today's
run.

Red Rock Canyon

6.5 Miles 50:34 7:45 average per mile
6:45 am) 60's Sunny! Nice!
First time running at Red Rock Canyon. I really enjoyed it. Very
nice trails. Can't wait to run it again. Tomorrow I will run at
Waldo Canyon. So many trails to run and so little time. Okay not
really I have the time. I have no job currently. I'm not really
looking yet either. I'm enjoying being a bum. I just can't be a
bum for very long.

Unitah & 26th St

6 Miles 41:51 6:59 average per mile
6:45 am) 60's partly sunny
Same run as yesterday went a extra mile. I have a few pictures
from the run above the last 3 pictures. I felt okay but the hills
are very hard for me.
Today rode the Cog Railway to the top of Pikes Peak. That was cool.
At the top it was cloudy though and didn't get any pictures took
a bunch on the way up. It was a cool 42 degrees at the top. We ate
some of the special donuts that they make. They were very good.
The total trip time was a little over 3 hours. I was tired when we
got back to Manitou Springs. I guess the altitude hit me.

Sunday, August 8, 2010

Unitah & 26th St

5 Miles 35:09 7:02 average per mile
7:15 am) 60's Sunny! Nice!
First run since moving to the springs. I have been very busy
since Wednesday. Two days of driving and two days of unloading
the trailer, van and my car and unpacking. It all went very
good but was lots of work and I don't want to move again. I'm
sure I will though. I couldn't have done it with out all the
help and hard work from my parents. Thanks so much!!!
My run today was my first from my new apartment. I only did 5
miles but it was hard. My run had lots of hills. I'm still
not used to the thin air either so that makes it even harder.
I even saw some wildlife today I saw a Coyote! It was off to
the side of the rode. It just looked at me. My run had some
awesome views I will get a picture up of the view I had at my
turn around point. Great run today! I love it here!

Montello, Wisconsin

7 Miles 46:00 6:34 average per mile
7:15 am) cloudy, very humid!
Was thinking about doing 8 or 9 miles but it was very
humid today and I cut the run short a bit. I ran way
too hard for the conditions. I actually ran faster
as the run went on. I felt like I was going to die at
mile 2 but just kept running faster.
Tomorrow morning we are finally hitting the road. We
will be traveling for 2 days. Friday morning I move
into my new apartment. I can't wait!

From church to my parents house

13.58 Miles 1:32:38 6:49 average per mile
9:15 am) Sunny warm
So I went to church with my parents today. After the service
changed my clothes and put on my running gear. I then ran
back to my parents house. The run was good but I wish I
could have started earlier. It was getting warm and humid.
The course was rolling hills the first 7 miles after that
it was flat. I ran a steady pace my slowest mile was mile
4 7:13 it was up hill for most of it. My fastest mile was
mile 2 6:37.

56.58 Miles for the week. I think this is the most I have
done in like 3 weeks. I have had a hard time getting in the
miles with all the packing and traveling. Plus I cut back some
due to a slow recovery from the 50 nile race. I'm starting
to feel good again!
