Oregon Trip

Well I'm back in Wisconsin. I had a great time in Oregon.
Saw a ton in a short amount of time. We drove nearly 1500
miles in 5 days. We drove thru mountains and over to the
coast and along the coast line. Saw some awesome waterfalls.
The mountains still have lots of snow. Did not get to go
to the top of any but made it up to the 6,000 to 7,000 ft.
range. This was my first time at any significant elevation.
I will be much higher in only 80 days at Pikes Peak marathon.
(14,132) What have I got myself into? It rained some mainly
inland. We spent 2 days on the coast and it was sunny. Temps.
were in the 50-70's range. I really liked the city of Eugene.
This is where the Olympic trials will be held for track & field
in July. It will be at historic Hayward Field. Eugene is a college
town and seems to be into fitness I saw many runners and bikers.
Portland was also a nice city. Very clean. Known as the city of roses.
Overall my impression of Oregon is it's clean, green, pretty,
awesome coast, great mountains and some amazing waterfalls. I'm
glad I went and would recommend it to anyone that has not been there.

6 6:13 168
7 6:14 170
8 6:59 164
When I took off for this run I had no real plan just see
how the IT would feel. I took along my IT band strap that
I purchased a few years back with me. I'm glad I did.
I made it only a few 100 yards and I could feel it acting
up already. So I put the strap on. At first it did not help
too much but after a minute or two I could tell it helped
no pain. So I felt good and decided to push the pace tonight.
Only 80 days till Pikes Peak. Time to get serious!!!

Mile 26.2 2:53:53 NO HR data
I think my average HR is about 158. Max HR was 171.
Good run today. It was alot harder than my last 2 marathons.
I started to slow after mile 16 plus then more of a head wind
from that point on. Still kept every mile under 7:00 so that's
good. Had a few issues with the new Garmin but it worked okay.
First half was 1:25:11. I was shooting for 1:25:00 so I was
happy with that. The wind and fatigue got me in the second half.
Took second in my age group. First time I have placed in my age
group in a marathon so that's cool. On another note my brother
Jeff ran 3:28 today and qualified for Boston. This was his 20th
marathon. I'm very happy for him. Way to go Jeff!!!

Interesting how I always have to run each mile slower to keep HR
under 135. Going to wear HR monitor for the marathon. I have never
worn one in a race so I will be curious to see what kind of numbers
I put up in race conditions. Will the same be true will my heart rate
continue to climb each mile or will it stabilize. I don't plan on
looking at it during the race. Afraid it might hold me back otherwise.
I like the Garmin HR monitor strap much better than the timex one I
have been using. I get a good reading from the start. The other one
would always take a mile or so before it would read it correctly.
100 days till Pikes Peak can't wait.

Run Away Shoes

Wednesday April 30, 2008
7 miles 54 minutes
Still sore from marathon. Getting better. Goal is
to run more next week and pick up the pace some.
Only 134 miles for the month of April. March was
255 miles so over 120 less miles. That's what tapering
does. Then the recovery period after.
